Platinum has been discovered in the western part of Sierra Leone. According to Mohamed Swarray Deen, that country’s minister, the government has sent security and personnel and geological teams to that area to prevent illegal mining. Coltan, a mineral used in producing electronic components and most notable for use in cellular telephones, was also discovered. Sierra Leone is renowned for naturally occurring diamonds and deposits of gold, bauxite, iron ore and chromite.
