Some doggie fashion experts trace this trend all the way back to the early 2000’s when socialite and reality star Paris Hilton began making all her public appearances with her new favorite accessory—a Chihuahua named Tinkerbell. The purse-size dog soon developed a larger-than-life personality, appearing in “Chewy Vuitton” carrying cases and living in a doghouse replica of Hilton’s Beverly Hills mansion. Hilton even teamed up with a leading pet clothing company to create a line of dog fashion, with Tinkerbell serving as the lead spokes-doggie for the brand.

But the final word in canine couture came when Tinkerbell appeared at a press event wearing a diamond-studded collar worth over $50,000. While faux diamond collars and dog jewelry have existed before, no one had ever seen a pet wear something worth more than most celebrity engagement rings! The collar, set with a combination of round and princess cut diamonds, inspired a more accessible version Hilton recently designed for commercial sale. This one features a bone-shaped charm set with crystals, and is priced at a much more accessible $10.
